Legends Never Die

The skateboard world, and downtown NYC, has lost a legend: Harold Hunter passed away on February 17 (yeah, I’m a little a slow…). The NY Times obit states the cause as a “heart attack.” Sadly, it appears to be a cocaine overdose. To many, Harold first hit the scene in Larry Clark’s 1995 film “Kids”. Skaters will probably first remember him from the 1993 Underworld Element video, 1-800 Skypager. In the skateboard community, there are certain pros that are firmly associated with a place and time, such as Mike York and EMB. For me, Harold represented downtown New York, mid-90’s. In fact, on a trip to the city in 1998, I skated over to the Astor Place cube hoping to see some East Coast legends. Sure enough, Harold was there. I remember people doing double-takes and you could see the bubbles above their heads, “Hey isn’t that the dude from ‘Kids’?” People from around the world are posting memories to this site
